How does intermittent fasting work?

Fasting changes where your body gets its energy. Typically, your energy comes from the food you eat, but during fasting when you don’t have an energy source coming in, it begins to burn fat to produce energy.

This is why fasting can lead to weight loss, improved metabolism, improved insulin sensitivity, and other health benefits.

Intermittent fasting works by changing the timing of when a person consumes their meals, which can have an impact on their metabolism and hormone levels.

During the periods of fasting, the body depletes its stores of glycogen (a form of glucose stored in the liver and muscles) and begins to use stored fat as an energy source. This leads to a decrease in insulin levels, which promotes fat burning and may help with weight loss.

It's important to note that intermittent fasting may not be suitable for everyone, and it's important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any fasting regimen. They can help determine whether intermittent fasting is safe and appropriate for you and provide guidance on how to manage nutritional needs while fasting.

  • Decrease brain fog, by forcing you to get energy from stored fat (a process called ketosis) instead of sugar

  • Decrease your risk for diabetes, by controlling blood sugar and reducing your body’s resistance to insulin.

  • Help you lose weight and belly fat by reducing insulin resistance

  • Improve sleep, by moving digestion earlier in the day

  • Protect your heart, by reducing blood pressure and improving cholesterol levels

  • Reduce inflammation by allowing your body time to rest and repair

  • Improved insulin sensitivity: Intermittent fasting can improve the body's response to insulin, which helps regulate blood sugar levels and may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

  • Reduced inflammation: Intermittent fasting has been shown to reduce inflammation in the body, which is linked to several chronic diseases.

  • Increased autophagy: Autophagy is a cellular process where the body removes damaged cells and proteins. Intermittent fasting may increase autophagy, which has been linked to improved cellular health and longevity.

  • Improved brain function: Intermittent fasting may have neuroprotective effects and improve cognitive function.
